It's been 27 years since Dick Zebo of Naples, Florida first landed on the shores of the Turks & Caicos Islands. His lifelong dream was to own a piece of the rock as they say, a piece of land in a distant and yet not too far away Caribbean Island. He ventured off to Grand Turk on the invitation of a local developer who wanted to learn how to dive and needed Zebo's instructional skills to take him to heretofore never explored depths of this magnificent turquoise ocean. This trip to Grand Turk, the capital of the Turks & Caicos Islands, resulted in a love affair that far exceeded any expectations he might have had after visiting a dozen or so islands in the Caribbean and West Indies. He dropped anchor because he had found everything he had ever wanted. An ocean full of fish and creatures just waiting to be fed or photographed. An island full of some of the friendliest people in the hemisphere and land still reasonably priced and affordable to many families. The rest is history.... Dick Zebo bought several hundred acres of prime beachfront in Grand Caicos, the largest and yet least developed island in the Caicos Islands. Grand Caicos, now known as Middle Caicos was still paradise, still unexplored and settled, save for the native population.
The largest island in the Turks & Caicos chain, Middle Caicos has an area of 48 square miles. However, Middle Caicos is also the least populated island with less than 300 residents. It is a very lush island suitable for agriculture. From medicinal herbs to majestic fruit trees, Middle’s form of agriculture is a cultural feast to behold: Cassava, okra and guava, tamarinds, sapodillas and sugar apples, to name just a few. But the cornerstone of their crops is corn. Home grown and home ground, they use the pearly hearts to make their fabulous grits.
The three
communities on Middle Caicos are Conch Bar, Lorimers, and Bambarra.
The settlement of Bambarra was established on the north shore of
Middle Caicos in 1842 by survivors of the shipwreck of the Gambia, a
Spanish slaver bound for Cuba. "Bambarra" refers to the Bambarra
people who lived on the shores of the Niger River in West Africa. Zebo
had found his own private paradise and quickly built the first of two
duplexes on Bambarra Beach in 1990.In no hurry to share his private
paradise, he sold a few lots here and a few lots there which resulted
in the construction of another eight or nine homes on Bambarra Beach
or slightly behind it. Along the way, other parcels were offered and
he either purchased or paid for purchase options. All in all,
approximately 150 acres were purchased of which 95% were ultimately
subdivided and sold. In 2006, word had already trickled down with
regards to the deepwater port in North Caicos, The Causeway linking
North and Middle Caicos as well as 21 miles of blacktop road spanning
the entire island from East to West......Zebo and a group of
investment partners quickly took advantage of a offer of sale of an
additional 37 acres of property with approximately 1100 feet of
frontage in section 40202.7. These too, were subdivided and 95%
of the lots were sold in less than 150 days.
Middle Caicos (+/- 48 sq. miles) - Middle Caicos is an attractive island with towering limestone cliffs that drop sharply to secluded beaches of emerald-blue water, laced with soft white sand. Here you can examine the ruins of villages by the Arawaks and the Lucayan Indians, as well as ruins of the plantation era. Natural wonders abound on this island; it features cathedral size limestone caves with underground salt lakes which are residence to bats and owls..... Share your dreams with your children
